13.20. Idea

Chapel for academic credit.  Attend chapel for two days of the week.  Meet for small group discussion with a faculty mentor on the third day.  Research paper and weekly reflection papers or online forum discussion posts required.  3 credits.

(Note: faculty mentor would get 1 hour of load credit).

I would enjoy that because:
1. I enjoy chapel services (I enjoy praising and worshiping our King through song, and I enjoy listen to people preach and teach the Word of God).
2. I enjoy talking with others about Christ, His Word, and what He's doing.
3. I enjoy writing.

Pros I see:
1. May help some people pay more attention to what is said in chapel and, in turn, help them apply it to their lives.

Cons I see:
1. Some people already go to chapel only because they have to, and this would still be similar.
2. Although the students would "get something" for themselves, course credit, they still may only do the "coursework" because they have to and not fully listen or reflect on what was said.

My further opinion:
Chapel should be optional. Just because Bethel is a "Christian" college doesn't mean everyone who attends or teaches there is a true believer. Going to chapel doesn't make someone choose to accept Christ as their Savior and allow Him to be their Lord. How many totally zone out during chapel because they "have" to be there? Yes, seeds are planted when the Word is brought forth. God's Word doesn't return void. And I think think there would still be people in chapel because they want to, even if they didn't have to. (And sometimes those are the best services to attend.)
